A dental emergency can happen at any time. The vital part of a dental emergency is to be prepared for it when it does happen. At Stoker Family Dental, we want to help educate our patients on a dental emergency and how Dr. Stoker can treat it.
What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is a dental concern that needs immediate attention, or else the underlying tooth, gums, or soft tissue may suffer permanent damage. There are several dental emergencies. Below are a few different types of dental emergencies.
Knocked-out Tooth. Many times patients lose their teeth during sports games or other accidents. If your tooth becomes knocked out, do not panic. First, try to locate the tooth. If you can find the tooth, place it back in the socket. Do not wipe it off or clean it. This action may seem counterintuitive, but cleaning off the tooth could put it at risk of losing essential structures. If the tooth does not fit back into the socket, place it in a bag or jar of milk. Then, call Stoker Family Dentistry for an emergency dental appointment. Our dental team will prepare for you to arrive.
Broken Tooth or Crown. If you have a broken tooth or crown, don’t panic. Call our dental office right away for an emergency dental appointment. Often, patients do not crack their teeth on hard foods but soft foods. Teeth may fracture while chewing soft foods because the tooth already has significant decay and is more prone to breaking.
Toothache. If you have a toothache, you should first brush and gently floss your teeth. Doing so can help remove any debris that may be causing pain. If the pain does not subside, take over-the-counter pain medication and call our office right away. We will prepare an emergency dental appointment for you.
How can a Dental Emergency be Restored?
There are several ways that Dr. Stoker can restore a dental emergency at Stoker Family Dental. Below are the main ways Dr. Stoker may repair a knocked-out or cracked tooth.
Dental Bonding. We use dental bonding to restore a chipped tooth. To complete this procedure, Dr. Stoker will use a composite resin to fill in your tooth, similar to an acrylic resin. The composite resin is a tooth-colored filling that looks and functions like a natural tooth. Then, Dr. Stoker will form the tooth to your liking.
Dental Crown. If you have significant decay or crack in your tooth, Dr. Stoker may recommend a dental crown. To place a dental crown, Dr. Stoker will first wear down the tooth so that the crown can fit over the natural tooth. Once we place the dental crown, we will cure it in position. Finally, Dr. Stoker will form the dental crown to your liking, so it looks and feels like a natural tooth.
Dental Implant. Lastly, if your tooth is knocked out and cannot be repaired, Dr. Stoker may recommend a dental implant. This procedure replaces the entire tooth from the gums to the chewing surface. Dental implants are made of solid titanium, durable for everyday wear and tear. Dental implants are also topped with porcelain crowns that match the appearance of your smile.
